Relationships Flashcards
Explain two differing beliefs about homosexual relationships/same-sex marriage in Christianity [5 marker]
- Some Christians oppose homosexual relationships because they do not support God’s plan for humans. They believe that God created humans to be heterosexual and pro-create: “Be fruitful and increase in number” (Bible)
- Other Christians accept homosexual relationships if the couple are in a lifelong, loving relationship. This is because they see this as the most loving thing to do in a changing world
Explain two differing beliefs about pre-marital sex in Christianity [5 marker]
- Some Christians e.g. Catholics see pre-marital sex as unacceptable. This is because they believe sex is a gift from God which can only happen in the deep loving relationship of marriage. The Pope said “Every sexual act must be within the framework of marriage
- Other Christians think that pre-marital sex is acceptable if the couple are in a loving, committed relationship and intend to marry. They accept it is a valid expression of love for one another
Explain two reasons why Christians believe that adultery is wrong [5 marker]
- Christians believe that adultery is wrong because it breaks the marriage vows “until death do us part”. Christians see marriage as a sacrament which demands total faithfulness
- Christians also believe that adultery is wrong because it involves secrecy, lies and betrays trust. Furthermore, children within the relationship can suffer
Explain two differing Christian beliefs about the use of contraception [5 marks]
- Some Christians e.g. Catholics do not believe in artificial contraceptin because it goes against natural law. God’s purpose for marriage is to have a family. Humane Vitae “Every sexual act should have the possibility of creating new life”
- Other Christians believe that bringing a baby into a life of deprivation would be unfair. They allow contraception to enable couples to develop their relationship before having children or to space out pregnancies
Explain two religious beliefs about marriage [5 marker]
- Christians believe that marriage is part of God’s plan for humans. God plans for couples to pro-create and raise a family in the Christian faith
- Christians also believe that marriage provides mutual help and comfort. In the marriage vows, the couple promises to love and care for each other “until death do us part”
Explain two Christian beliefs about divorce [5 marker]
- Some Christians e.g. Catholics do not recognise divorce. This is because they believe that marriage is a lifelong sacrament and the couple make vows before God that can never be broken. Married couples become “one flesh” (Bible)
- Other Christians recognise divorce under some circumstances, although they see it as a last resort. This is because the believe it could be the lesser of two evils
Explain two Christian beliefs about remarriage [5 marker]
- Some Christians e.g. Catholics do not accept remarriage because they see it as adultery: “Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her” (Jesus). Couples who remarry while their first partner is alive cannot receive bread and wine at Mass
- Other Christians accept remarriage as long as long as the couple takes the vows seriously. This is beacuse they believe people who have made a mistake should have the opportunity to find happiness in a second marriage
Explain two Christian beliefs about cohabitation [5 marker]
- Some Christians e.g. Catholics do not accept cohabitation. This is because they believe that sex should only happen inside marriage. The Catechism says: “The sexual act must take place exclusively in marriage”
- Other Christiansbelieve that although marriage is best, people may live together when not. However, they believe that this should be a faithful, loving and committed relationship
Explain two Christian beliefs about the nature of family [5 marker]
- Some Christians believe that families should be headed by a man and a woman. This is because they believe children should have a male and female role model and that the purpose of marriage is to “be fruitful and multiply” (Bible)
- Christians believe that families are expected to be places of love and warmth. This is because family life shold reflect the love of God
What are the 4 purposes of family for Christians?
- Procreation
- Stability
- Protection of children
- Educating children in the faith
Explain two Christian beliefs about the role of family members [5 marker]
- Christians believe that children must love and respect their parents for all they have done to help them grow. The Bible says: “Honour your mother and your father”. 10 commandments also state respect the elderly members of your family
- Christians believe that the role of parents is to raise children as good Christians. Some parents make worship part of their lives or send children to faith schools
Explain two contrasting beliefs about polygamy [5 marker]
- Christians oppose polygamy because God’s plan for marriage was one man and one woman. This is shown by Adam and Eve. The Bible says: “Every man should have his own wife, and every woman should have her own husband”
- Muslims accept polygamy and men may marry up to four wives. However, the husband must treat them all equally and the first wife has to agree
Explain two Christian beliefs about same-sex parenting [5 marks]
- Some Christians oppose same-sex parenting because God’s plan is for children to be raised within a heterosexual marriage. They also believe children should grow up with male and female role models. The Bible says: “Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman”
- Other Christians accept same-sex parenting because they believe it is more important for children to be in a secure and loving family regardless of the gender of their parents. These Christians do not see homosexuality as a sin
Outline two ways in which men and women are not treated equally in British society [4 marker]
- In the workforce, woman are paid on average 19.8% less than men for doing the same jobs. Furthermore, less of the female workforce are in senior positions
- However, there is an assumption that men are unsuitable for certain jobs e.g. nursery worker. According to a poll, 28% of men feel they are discriminated against
Explain two Christian beliefs about gender equality in society [5 marker]
- Some traditional Christians believe that men are the head of the family and that women should mainly stay at home and care for children. This belief stems from the literal interpretations of the early teaching of the Bible “I permit no women to teach or have authority over men”
- However, most Christians believe that men and women should have equal roles at home, work and Church. This is because discrimination goes against Jesus’ teachings to love one another
