relationship between faith and reason PADA Flashcards
what is the greatest value of PADA for faith?
it supports faith by reasoning. PADA supports the view of natural theology, that the existence of god can be seen in nature. the argument cannot prove god’s existence, but it can demonstrate that theologians and philosophers can use reason and observation to discuss god meaningfully and rationally.
how can PADA be used to defend faith against atheism?
- atheists claim that religion is unreasonable bc it is no more than idle speculation
- but speculating that ‘god does not exist’ is surely just as reasonable as speculating ‘god does exist’ as atheists have no more evidence for god not existing than theists do that he does exist
what characteristic of PADA can be useful for faith?
its simplicity
how can it be argued that PADA has no value for faith?
some would argue that faith doe not depend on any kind of proof or probability, as it depends on commitment to god and to a religious way of life
how can HH price’s argument be applied here?
there is a difference between belief in and belief that. PADA provides evidence for belief THAT god exists but it also comments on the wondrous nature of the design of the universe, suggesting that this supports belief IN god
