What was Cecil Rhodes aim in South Africa?
To bring the Boer Republics (the Transvaal and the Orange Free state) into a South Africa federation with Britain at the head of this alliance
Why did Cecil Rhodes want a federation in South Africa?
Both him and colonail Secretary Chamberlain were worried for British dominace in South Africa, which led to there support for the Jameson raid of 1895 to try and topple Kruger’s government as well as anger over the Uitlander’s deniel of voting rights
When was the Blomberg conference?
May- June 1899
Milner demanded that the Transvaal grant voting rights to the Uitlanders but Kruger refused, however despite half hearted attempts at comrpomise, both sides began to mobilise their troops and in 1899 war broke out
How was British victory won in the Boer war?
General Kitchener launced “scorched earth” policy which involved incinerating Boer farms and live stocks. Boer families and black Africans were interned in concetration camps and suffered horrendous conditions
By the end of the Boer war how many people were living in the concetration camps?
115,000 (mainly women and children)

What did the Boer war indicate to Britain in regards to its empire?
= Britain’s confidence as an imperial power was shaken
due to the relying heavily on troops from rest of empire (esp India)
Indicaiton that Naval power was inefficent for expansion across land and that the army was ineffective and troop heath poor
It also reduced the appeal of Jingoism and highlighted the need for “national efficiency”
