Dahala Khagrabari
Along the border of Bangladesh and India, the small enclave was a piece of India inside a small piece of Bangladesh inside India inside Bangladesh. It was ceded to Bangladesh in 2015 in the Land Boundary Agreement which exchanged 162 enclaves between the two countries.
Dalits
In the traditional Indian caste system, they were the lowest stratum of the castes, often known as untouchables. They were not a part of the four traditional varnas but instead in the fifth varna called Panchama. They often performed sanitation work or hide tanning.
Day of Direct Action 1946
One August 16, 1946, the All-India Muslim League led protests turning to riots in order to demand a separate Muslim nation after the British Raj ended. The event is also known as Calcutta Killings with violence between Muslims and Hindus killing over 4,000 people. Effects of the direct action were discussion of partition of Bengal and Pakistan.
Deccan Plateau
It is a plateau located in central India between the Eastern and Western Ghats. It is in a peninsular shape and is on average 2,000 feet above sea level. It has rocky terrain with black and red soil and a more dry climate.
Delhi
The national capital territory of India includes the capital city of New Delhi. IT houses the federal government of India and the local government of Delhi. It was the capital city of the Delhi Sultanate and Mughal Empire.
Demolition of Babri Masjid
On December 6, 1992, a mosque from the 16th century during the Mughal Empire was demolished. There was a rally led by the Vishva Hindu Parishad to build a temple to Rama in the same location, but the rally turned violent, leading the group to tear down the mosque.
Dhaka
The capital city of Bangladesh was formerly known as Dacca. It is the largest Bengali-speaking city and is very densely populated. It is located along the Ganges Delta and its historical nickname is “Venice of the East.”
Dharasana Salt Workers Protest
This protest in May 1930 grew out of Gandhi’s boycott of the British imperial salt tax. Protestors sought to shut down the factory and were severely and repeatedly beaten as the continued to march towards the gates. The action gained media attention and drew attention to the brutality used in British rule.

One of the four main tenets of life from Hinduism, it is the moral law governing expected behavior and conduct. It can be specific for one’s class or station in society.
divide and rule
A policy used extensively by the British during their colorization of India in which they sought to maintain control by creating opposition between the subordinate groups, specifically classes and religions to prohibit them from uniting together.
Diwali
Known as the festival of lights in Indian culture, it was originally a Hindu festival, but today it is also celebrated by Buddhists, Jainists, and Sikhs. It symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and is a post-harvest celebration. Entire communities and families bond with parades, music, performances, and dances.
Driglam Namzha
This code for etiquette in Bhutan translates to custom system. It has been linked to a 17th century Tibetan lama, and it describes how one should dress and behave in public while also describing architectural assets.
dzongs
This type of architecture for a fort or monastery in Bhutan and Tibet means “castle.” It has high walls made of brick and stone that surround the complex that includes temples, courtyards, and offices within it.
