Balochistan
The historical region is divided today by Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan; the largest portion is in Pakistan. It is believed to have been in habited as early as 7,000 BCE. The culture is centered around the Baloch people with a pastoral nomadic lifestyle. Residents have sought autonomy.
Bangalore
The capital of Karnataka in India, it is a highly populated urban area. Today, it is known as the nation’s leading software exporter and most productive metro areas in India. It was officially renamed Bengaluru in 2014.
Battle of Plassey
This was a turning point battle for control of the subcontinent between the British EIC and the Bengal Subah on June 23, 1757, in Plassey, Bengal Subah. The British were led by Robert Clive and led to the British EIC taking control of Bengal. The Bengal Subah had the alliance of the French EIC and was led by Siraj-ud-Daulah.
Bay of Bengal
The bay is in the Indian Ocean located between Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and the Malay Peninsula. Several rivers flow into the bay which occupies of 1,000,000 square miles. It includes islands and archipelagos of Indian and Myanmar.
Bengal Famine of 1943
This famine killed approximately three million people. During WWII, cyclones and wartime damage led to a shortage of rice crops which were followed by British troops exporting food to troops in the Middle East.
Bhagavad Gita
The holy book of the Hindu religion includes 700 verses of scripture. It is dated back to the 2nd century BCE. It describes a discussion on the ethics of war and connects with further ideas of ethical dilemmas.
Bharata
He was a legendary king from the ancient Indian epic, Ramayana. He is represented by the symbol of dharma and means “one to be maintained” in Sanskrit. There are a few temples around India to worship him, and he is often depicted in Indian epic dramas. His name is the root of the term often used for India, Bharat.
Bharatiya Janata Party
The leading political party in India since 2014, it is a right-wing group with policies linked to Hindu nationalist ideology. BJP is one of the two dominant political parties in India and was first formed in 1965.
Bhola Cyclone (1970)
A tropical cyclone formed in the Bay of Bengal and struck Eastern Pakistan and West Bengal on November 12, 1970. It was rated a Category 4 cyclone and is known as the deadliest disaster with over 300,000 deaths.
Bihar
This eastern state in India borders Nepal and has a capital city of Patna. The name is Sanskrit for monastery and historically had many Buddhist temples and was the center of learning in the Videha kingdom. In 2000, the state split and the southern portion became Jharkhand.
Black July
In July of 1893, a violent riot against Tamils took place throughout Sri Lanka. It started after the LTTE killed Sri Lankan Army soldiers. Estimates of the death toll range from 400 to 3,000 while many homes and stores were destroyed. This month is oftern seen as the beginning of the Srik Lankan Civil War that lasted until 2009.
Bollywood
This film industry is in India, based out of Mumbai (formerly Bombay) and produces movies and television shows in Hindi, English, and Urdu. The industry is one of the largest centers of film production in the world.
Brahmaputra River
This large river travels through China, Indi, Bangladesh, and Tibet before merging with the Ganges River and emptying into the Bay of Bengal. The river is known by different names in each country and is used for irrigation and transportation.
Buddhism
This is a religion or philosophical thinking based on the teachings of Buddha; originated in northern India in the 5th century BCE. The teachings aim for the liberation of attachment by following the Noble Eightfold Path. Today, it is the fourth-largest religion in the world.
