Features: central obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia, glucose intolerance or insulin resistance

A

Many people with schizophrenia do not receive baseline tests assessing metabolic factors

Poorer quality of care of diabetes mellitus (DM) in those with schizophrenia. E.g. CATIE schizophrenia study, non-treatment rate for DM was 45%

Fewer follow-up tests of HbA1c, fasting lipids and retinal examinations despite clear guidelines for DM care

A
  • Space-occupying lesion, CVA or other abnormality (MRI)
  • Endocrine: hyper/hypothyroidism
  • Low levels of B12 and folate
  • Abnormalities in calcium/sodium/potassium levels
  • Infection and inflammation: Syphilis, HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C
  • Autoantibody mediated encephalitis or systemic lupus erythematous (NMDA, VGKC)
