Reinforcement Schedules & LIMA Principal Flashcards
Type of reinforcement schedule: continuous reinforcement
Is the repeated reinforcement of a behaviour every time it happens - one reinforcer for one response
Type of reinforcement schedule: fixed duration
Schedules require the behaviour to be performed for a set period of time before the reinforcement / reward is delivered
Type of reinforcement schedule: variable ratio
Schedule of reinforcement where a behaviour is reinforced after a random number of responses, results in high steady rates of responding- varying type of reinforcer
Type of reinforcement schedule: differential reinforcement
The process of reinforcing a specific response in a particular context and not reinforcing other responses
Type of reinforcement schedule: fixed ratio
Reinforcement is delivered after the completion of a fixed number of responses
What does LIMA stand for ?
Least Intrusive Minimally Aversive
Describe the LIMA principle:
Methods of training that cause the least stress, pain and discomfort, animal welfare needs should be put at forefront of training
Order of Training methods under LIMA principle:
Least Intrusive:
- Medical, nutritional, physical
- Antecedent arrangements (environment)
- Positive reinforcement
Avoided if possible:
- Differential reinforcement
- Extinction, negative punishment / reinforcement
Most intrusive - only used if it’s an emergency:
- Positive punishment
