What are the causes of abnormal behaviour?

  • stress
  • loud noise
  • overcrowded eg. Lots of people/animals around
  • boredom, lack of enrichment & under stimulated from captivity
  • frustration through restriction of behaviours
  • instinct/innate behaviours performed out of context
  • external cues eg. Weather
  • unnatural social groups / social deprivation
  • previous damage to CNS
  • pain
  • early weaning
  • inappropriate training or learning
  • one or more of 5 needs not being met

Social, locomotory & oral abnormalities, repetitive, no goal

Type of abnormal behaviour: Displacement behaviours

A

Out of context. For example, a horse wants to walk across the road but can’t so gets frustrated so grooms itself instead as a coping mechanism. Therefore, replacing the behaviour it wants to do with a random one
