What are the causes of abnormal behaviour?
- stress
- loud noise
- overcrowded eg. Lots of people/animals around
- boredom, lack of enrichment & under stimulated from captivity
- frustration through restriction of behaviours
- instinct/innate behaviours performed out of context
- external cues eg. Weather
- unnatural social groups / social deprivation
- previous damage to CNS
- pain
- early weaning
- inappropriate training or learning
- one or more of 5 needs not being met
Motivations for animals :
- hunting / food
- water
- reproducing
- social contact or avoiding Social contact
- seeking joy / positive emotions
- migration
- removal or avoidance of pain and discomfort
Type of abnormal behaviour: stereotypical behaviours
Social, locomotory & oral abnormalities, repetitive, no goal
Type of abnormal behaviour: Displacement behaviours
Out of context. For example, a horse wants to walk across the road but can’t so gets frustrated so grooms itself instead as a coping mechanism. Therefore, replacing the behaviour it wants to do with a random one
Type of abnormal behaviour: Hyperactivity
Can be a concern if excessive and out of context (specific to individual)
Type of abnormal behaviour: Inactivity
A concern if our if context for specific individual
Type of abnormal behaviour: ** learned Helpless**
Feel like they want to give up eg. Elephant chained up feels like it cannot escape even if it could and weaves even if it wasn’t chained up
