Rehabilitative Flashcards
1
Q
rehabilitative exercises
A
shaker's tongue strengthening mendelsohn (comp and rehab?) effortful swallow (comp and rehab?) Masako effortful pitch glide effortful swallow
2
Q
shaker’s
A
use for: poor hyolaryngeal excursion and UES opening
-lift head while keeping shoulder flat on floor (10-30 times), then sustained for 30 seconds (6 weeks)
-works anterior neck muscles and muscles that lift larynx, improves hyloryngeal excursion and UES opening
(robbins, 2007): strengthens tongue and swallow in CVA patients
3
Q
Masako
A
- hold tongue between teeth while swallowing
- used for: poor BOT retraction
- supposed to increase BOT retraction
4
Q
tongue strengthening exercises
A
- (Robbins) isometric lingual resitance exercise (use IOPI)
- strengthens tongue
5
Q
effortful pitch glide
A
“ee” from low to high with sharp high pitch at end.. hold for 10-20 seconds
-rationale: ( ) shown to work same muscles as involved in swallowing
6
Q
mendelseohn maneuver
A
(Kahrilas et al)
- focus on adam’s apple, lift as high as you can, hold for a few senconds before letting it drop
- results in higher laryngeal elevation, greater amplitude of structural movement,s longer UES opening
7
Q
EFFORTFUL SWALLOW
A
- (Logemann, 1990)
- squeeze tongue and throat muscles and hold while swallowing
- results in better tongue base retraction, pharyngeal squeeze, overall stronger swallow (compens and rehab)
