Rehabilitation of Injuries Flashcards
What happens in the early stage of recovery?
Action should be gentle and allow the tissue to heal
What happens in the mid stage of recovery?
The athlete should progressively load the muscles/tendons/bones/ligaments to develop strength
What happens in the late stage of recovery?
The tissue adapts and is stressed using functional exercises
What is cold therapy?
Ice/cold water to induce vasoconstriction and reducing swelling or bruising
How long should cold therapy take place for?
Up to 20 minutes and reapplied every 1-3 hours to avoid vasodilation and ice burns
What is heat therapy?
Heat packs to induce vasodilation and remove tension
How long should heat therapy last?
Up to 20 minutes
What is contrast therapy?
Alternating use of hot and cold therapy to increase blood flow and reduce swelling
How long should contrast therapy take?
6-10 minutes with a ratio of 1 min cold water:3 mins hot water
What is massage?
Used on soft tissue injuries, massage moves fluids and nutrients through damaged tissue and removes waste products
What is the effect of massage?
To increase joint mobility by breaking down scar tissue
What is physiotherapy?
A qualified physio mobilises and manipulates the injured part and can use methods such as electrotherapy (ultrasound) plus massage
How is stretching used in rehab?
First 3 days= no stretching
mid phase= static and passive
later phase= PNF
long-term= dynamic and ballistic
What is the main Anti-inflammatory drug used?
NSAIDs
What are NSAID’s used for?
Reduce pain in acute soft tissue injuries
