Injury Prevention and Risk Factors Flashcards
What are the intrinsic risk factors?
PINT
Posture and alignment
Past and previous injuries
Nutrition
Training
How can previous injuries affect injury?
Loss of strength and decreased range of motion
How can posture and alignment affect injury?
Exaggerated curvature of the spine can increase injury
How can nutrition affect injury?
Lack of carbohydrates means less energy and so increased risk
Lack of protein means inadequate growth and repair of tissues and so increased injury
What are the extrinsic risk factors?
Coaches (coaching correct technique)
Rule changes
Age
Protective equipment
Footwear
How can a warm-up reduce sprains and strains?
Increased range of motion around the joint
How can a warm-up reduce fatigue?
Body temperature increases and oxygen diffusion is increased
What are the requirements for a warm-up?
- 30 minutes
- Intensity should gradually increase
- Pulse raiser and dynamic stretches
- Sport specific drills
What are the effects of the cool-down?
- Reduces stiffness in muscles and ligaments and tendons
- Blood doesn’t pool and remains circulating
- Buffers lactic acid and reduces DOMS
What are the requirements for a cool-down?
- 20-30 mins
- Gradually decreasing in intensity
- Light aerobic activity and stretching
