regulation of respiration Flashcards
respiratory center is composed of several groups of neurons located bilaterally in
medulla oblongata and pons of the brain stem
respiratory center is divided into three major COLLECTIONS of neurons
1) dorsal respiratory group
2) ventral respiratory group
3) pneumotaxic center
dorsal respiratory group
located in the dorsal portion of medulla, which mainly causes INSPIRATION
ventral respiratory center
located in ventrolateral portion of medulla, which mainly causes EXPIRATION
pneumotaxic center
located dorsally in superior portion of pons, mainly controls the RATE AND DEPTH OF BREATHING
most of neurons of dorsal respiratory group are located in
nucleus of TRACTUS SOLITARIUS (NTS)
additional neurons locate in the adjacent reticular substance of medulla
also play an imp rol in respiratory control
NTS is sensory termination of both
VAGUS and GLOSSOPHARYNGEAL NERVES, which transmit sensory signals into respiratory center from
- peripheral chemoreceptors
- baroreceptors
- other receptors of lungs
the basic rythms of respiration are generated in
dorsal respiratory group
inspiratory signals are ramp signal
it causes the steady increase in volume of lungs uring inspiration rather than inspiratory gasps
