Regression Flashcards
Multiple regression
A hypothesis test done on 2+ interval/ratio IVs, with an interval/ratio DV. The goal is to predict the DV (criterion) using the IV (predictor).
Simple regression equation
ŷ = a + bx
Simple regression
A hypothesis test done on 1 interval/ratio IV, with an interval/ratio DV. The goal is to predict the DV (criterion) using the IV (predictor).
Criterion
Dependent variable (DV), represented by “ŷ”
Predictor
Independent variable (IV), represented by “x”
Coefficient
slope, represented by “b”
Constant
y-intercept, represented by “a”
Null hypothesis
Ŷ ≠ Y. The regression equation does not significantly predict y- values. PRE is NOT significant (not significantly different in estimating DV value from using the mean).
Alternative hypothesis
Ŷ = Y. The regression equation does
significantly predict y-values. PRE IS significant (significantly different in estimating DV value from using the mean).
Proportionate Reduction in Error (PRE)
Percent reduction in error term obtained by using regression over mean.
Error term
There is always some error between ŷ and y (distance). Error = y - ŷ
y = a + bx + ε (error term)
