Geographical spaces shaped by individuals & communities over time
Rural-urban continuum

Places may vary in characteristics along a rural-urban continuum.
The unbroken transition from sparsely populated or unpopulated, remote rural places to densely populated, intensively used urban places (town & city centres).
Regeneration
Long-term upgrading of existing places or more drastic renewal schemes for urban, residential, retail, industrial, commercial, and rural areas.
Re-branding
Places are given a new or enhanced identity to increase their attractiveness and socio-economic viability, in order to attract new investors
Location Quotients
Mapable ratio
- helps show specialisation in any data distribution being studied. Figure equal/close to 1.00 suggests national & local patterns are similar w/ no particular specialisation. LQs over 1 show a concentration of that type of employment locally.
Postcode Lottery
Refers to uneven distribution of local personal health & health services nationally, esp. in mental health/early diagnosis of cancer & emergency care for elderly

Impacts of poor health linked to deprivation.
Refers to the low life expectancy and poor health of residents of Glasgow, Scotland
Quinary
Highest level of decision making in the economy. Concentrated in STEM employment.
Gross value added
Measures contribution to the economy of each individual producer, industry or sector. Used in calculating GDP
Quality of life
Level of social & economic well-being experienced by individuals/communities measured by various indicators e.g. health, happiness, educational achievement, income & leisure time.
Wider concept than ‘standard of living’ which is centred on just income.
Functions
Roles a place plays for its community & surroundings.
They may grow, disappear & change over time. There is a hierarchy according to size & number of functions
Larger places usually offer regional, national or global functions.
Characteristics
Physical/human aspects that help distinguish one place from another:
location, natural features, layout, land use, architecture & cultural traits
Connections
Any type of physical, social or online linkage between places.
Places may keep some of their characteristics/change them as a result.
Sink estate
Housing estates characterised by high levels of economic & social deprivation and crime, esp. domestic violence, drugs & gang warfare.
Originates from 30 years of gov policy, resulting in segregating low-income groups needing social assistance from the rest of society.
Gated communities
Found in urban & rural settlements as either individual buildings or groups of houses.
Landscapes of surveillance w/ CCTV & often 24/7 security guards.
Designed to deter access by unknown people & reduce crime.
a form of residential community or housing estate containing strictly controlled entrances for pedestrians, bicycles, and automobiles, and often characterized by a closed perimeter of walls and fences.
