what are characteristics
the physical and human aspects which distinguish places from each other
how do students change the function and characteristics of a city
function:
-businesses adapt to students needs
-more leisure (nightclubs)
-large housing for students
characteristics:
-overcrowded
-improved facilities (libraries)
-young and diverse population
what is studentification
the process by which specific neighbourhoods become dominated by student residential occupation
what are replicator cities
they replace low skilled secondary employment in factories with low skilled, low wage tertiary employment in eg. call centres/ retail
what are reinventor cities
they change their economic base away from low skilled secondary employment in factories to high skilled, high wage IT and digital media jobs

what is regeneration
the process of improving a region or city that has declined or decayed
what is rebranding
the marketing aspect of regeneration designed to attract businesses, residents and visitors by changing its image
what is gentrification
where wealthier people move into a poorer area, renovating properties and increasing the value of the neighbourhood

positive and negative impacts on gentrification
positive:
-more bars/ restaurants
- more job opportunities
- improved facilities (train station)
negatives:
-loss of community
-old, well known shops taken down
- lack of variety housing
