Refractive error Flashcards
What is meant by a refractive error?
Refers to any abnormality in the focusing mechanism of the eye
What is meant by emmetropia?
No refractive error, light focussed onto retina
What is meant by ametropia?
Retractive error present, light focussed in front of retina or behind retina
What is meant by anisometropia?
Significant difference between right and left ametropia
What is myopia?
Light rays focus in front of the retina
Short sighted
What is meant by astigmatism?
Light rays focus on more than one point (Unequal refraction of light in different meridians)
What is hypermetropia (Hyperopia)?
Light rays focus behind the retina
Long sighted
What causes myopia?
Abnormally increased axial length of eye or, less commonly, increased refraction means light focuses in front of the retina
How will myopia present?
Clear near vision, blurred far vision
How is myopia managed?
Glasses with concave (negative) lenses
What are some complications of myopia?
Complications related to larger eyeball size
Retinal detachment
Primary open-angle glaucoma
What causes hypermetropia?
Abnormally decreased axial length of eye means light focuses in behind the retina
How will hypermetropia present?
Blurred near vision, clear far vision
How is hypermetropia managed?
Glasses with convex (positive) lenses
What are some complications of hypermetropia?
Complications related to smaller eyeball size
Closed-angle glaucoma
