Gradual vision loss Flashcards
1
Q
What are some causes of gradual vision loss?
A
- Cataracts
- Refractive error
- Dry ARMD
- Open-angle glaucoma
- Diabetic retinopathy
Think ABC:
A - Age-related macular degeneration (Dry)
B - Blur (Refractive error)
C - Cataracts
2
Q
What are cataracts?
A
Opacifications within the lens
3
Q
What are some different types of cataract?
A
- Nuclear cataract
- Posterior sub-capsular cataract
- Christmas tree cataract (Polychromatic cataract)
- Mature cataract
4
Q
What is shown?
A
Posterior sub-capsular cataract
5
Q
What is shown?
A
Flower shaped cataract (Blunt trauma)
6
Q
What are some risk factors for developing cataracts?
A
- Ageing
- UVB damage
- Hypertension
- Smoking
- Post-op and trauma
- Steroids
- Metabolic disorders (E.g. Diabetes)
- Genetics
7
Q
How do cataracts form with age?
A
- Epithelium of the lens matures
- Eventually cell contents are replaced and nucleus disappears
- Cell outline is left and becomes a fibre within the cels
- Degenerative changes in lens fibre proteins (Crystallins) results in chemical and structural alteration
- Causing loss of transparency
8
Q
How do cataracts present?
A
Gradual visual loss (‘hazy’/’blurred’)
9
Q
How can cataracts be managed?
A
- Surgical removal (Phaecoemulsification) with intra-ocular lens implant if patient is symptomatic
- Phaecoemulsification pulses the lens and degrades it
