Refraction of light Flashcards
Small angle of incidence
Most light refracted however small bit is reflected
Critical angle
Refraction is bent through 90 degrees from the normal, refracted ray is weaker than the reflected ray
Angle of incidence>critical angle
All light is reflected, known as Total internal reflection
Requirements for a multimode optical fibre
Angle of incidence need to be greater than critical angle to ensure total internal reflection, glass cladding needs to be less dense than the fibre
Advantages of multimode
Cheap to maintain and install
Disadvantages of multimode
Limited distance and speed
Monomode optical fibre
Single wavelength due to very small hole, use lasers
Advantages of monomode
Efficient due to straight line and no reflections
Much faster
Disadvantages of monomode
Expensive to produce and maintain
Only 1 wavelength in a cable at a time
Equation for refractive index`
n=speed of light (c)/speed of light in material
