Refraction Flashcards
What is refraction?
Refraction is when light travels at an angle from one medium into another that causes it to bend or change direction.
What causes refraction?
Refraction is created when light rays travel from one medium into another, each with different densities, causing it to change speed and bend either towards or away from the normal.
What is the index of refraction?
The index of refraction is the ratio of the speed of light in a vacuum to the speed of light in a transparent medium (each transparent material has a different index of refraction).
What is the symbol for the index of refraction?
n
What is the two formulas for the index of refraction?
n=c/v or n= sin angle of incidence/sin angle of refraction
What is the speed of light in air?
300 000 000m/s
3.00x10^8m/s
What is total internal reflection?
When the reflection of light has an angle that is greater than the critical angle (hit the inside of the surface of a transparent medium).
What is the critical angle?
The minimum angle of incidence that light has to be at inside a transparent medium for total internal reflection to happen (for the angle of reflection to be at 90°).
What are examples of total internal reflection?
Idk
Where is total internal reflection used?
In diamonds (that make them look sparkling), in triangular prisms (that are used in periscope and binoculars) and in fibre optics.
