Refraction Flashcards
What is refraction
a deviation of the straight line path of a light wave it is due to the speed of light as it enters a medium of different optical density a ‘faster or ‘slower medium
What does the speed of light depend on
teh optical denisty of the medium
what is teh refractive index
indication of teh ability of a medium to slowdown light
What happens when light enters a slower medium
when light enters a slower medium (high refractive index) the relative speed of light is slower
therefore the refracted ray is reflected towards the normal
What happens when light enters a faster medium
when light enters a faster medium (low refractive index) the relative speed of light is faster
therefore teh refracted ray is refracted away from teh normal
In what medium can light travel faster
LIght travels fastest in gases because there are less particles to bump into rather than a slow solid
How do you calculate refractive index
refractive index divided by speed of light = speed of light in material
refractive index divided by speed of light in material = speed of light
speed of light x speed of light in material = refractive index
What is total internal reflection
as an angle of incidence on a transparent surface is icnreased more light is reflected and less light is refracted
what is critical incident
when light eneters a less optically dense medium it is refracted away from teh normal at critical incident angle of refraction is 90 degrees
