Light - Ray Model Flashcards
What is a ray
A form of energy that transfers from one aplce to teh other as an electromagnetic wave, it travels in a straight line called a ray
What is a beam
a beam is a parallel ray made visible by teh scattering of light (eg torch and laser)
What is a luminous object
emits its own light
what is a non luminous object
made visible by refelction of light from a luminous source
What is Incandescence
an object that produces light from burning (sun/candle)
What is bioluminesence
light production from a living organism (glow worm)
how does opaque material behave with light
all incident light is reflected or absorbed
how does transparent material behave with light
parallel rays icnident on material are transmitted through it and emerge parallel to incident dierection
how does translucent material behave with light
allows transmission of light rays put with some scattering that produces distorted images
What happens when light touches a surface
- transmission - light can go through the surface
- reflection - light can bounce off teh surface
- absorption - light goes into the surface and usually tranforms to heat energy
What are the different point of a light wave
crest - highest point of wave
troph - lowest point of wave
wavelength - distance fromone crest to the next
amplitude - ammount of energy it carries and teh hight from middle line
frequency - hwo many waves are produced per second (hertz)
