Refraction Flashcards
What is refraction
The bending of a Ray of light when it goes from one medium to another
What is incident Ray
The Ray of light falling on the glass block
What is normal at the point of incidence
The line drawn at the right angles to the glass block where the Ray strikes the block
What is refracted Ray
The Ray of light in the glass block
What happens when light travels from a rarer to a denser medium what happens ?
It is refracted towards the normal
When light travels from a denser to a rarer medium what happens
It is refracted away from the normal
What are the laws of refraction of light
- The incident ray , the normal at the point of incidence , the refracted ray all lie in the same plane.
- The ratio of sine of angle of incidence to the sine of angle of refraction is constant
What is snells law also called as second law or the refractive index
The ratio of sine of angle of incidence to the sine of angle of refracted is constant
What is refractive index of a medium
The ratio of sine of angle of incidence to the sine of angle of incidence when light travels from a vacuum into that medium
What is refractive index between two medium
The ratio of sine of angle of incidence to the sine of angle of refraction when light travels from one of those medium into the another
What are the formula of refractive index
R.I = Sin I / sin r
R.I OF MEDIUM = Real depth of an object / apparent depth
R.I OF MEDIUM =Speed of light in air / speed of light in medium
If the refractive index is greater the sl………the speed
Slower
What is critical angle
When light travels from a denser to a rarer medium the angle of refraction is 90 degree is called the critical angle of those two medium
What is total internal reflection
When light going from a denser to a rarer medium strikes the second medium with an angle of incidence greater than the critical angle , it doesn’t enter the second medium It is all reflected back in the denser medium.
What is the formula of refractive index using critical angle
R.I= 1/ sin C
What is optical fibre
A very thin transparent rod ( usually of glass) through which light can travel by total internal reflection
Uses of optic fibre
