Reflexes that Integrate During Typical Development Flashcards
Name the reflex (RSG CH 5)
STIM: stroke corner of mouth, upper lip, and lower lip
RESP: mvmt of tongue, mouth, and/or head during stim
FUNCT. SIGNIF.: helps baby locate feeding source to begin feed
ONSET AGE: 28 wks. gestation
INTEGR8N AGE: 3 mos.
Rooting
STIM: place examiner’s index finger inside infant’s mouth c head in midline
RESP: strong, rhythmic sucking
FUNCT. SIGNIF.: facilitate nutritive sucking for liquid ingestion
ONSET AGE: 28 wks. gestation
INTEGR8N AGE: 2-5 mos.
Suck-swallow
STIM: grasp infant forearms & pull-to-sit
RESP: complete flexion of UE
FUNCT. SIGNIF.: promote momentary grasp to enable chld to hold onto mother when being pulled
ONSET AGE: 28 wks. gestation
INTEGR8N AGE: 2-5 mos.
Traction
STIM: rapid drop infant head backwards
RESP: (1st phase) arm ext/ABDuct, hand opening; (second phase) arm flx/ADDuct
FUNCT. SIGNIF.: protective resp to stress; helps dev extensor tone during period when flexor tone is dominant.
ONSET AGE: 28 wks. gestation
INTEGR8N AGE: 4-6 mos.
Moro
STIM: apply pressure c thumb on infant ball of foot
RESP: toe flexion
FUNCT. SIGNIF.: incr input to sole of foot; integr8n assoc. c readiness for I gait
ONSET AGE: 28 wks. gestation
INTEGR8N AGE: 9 mos.
Plantar grasp
STIM: hold infant in prone suspension; gently scrath or tap along spine c finger, from shoulders to buttocks
RESP: Lateral trunk flx & wrinkling of skin on stim side
FUNCT. SIGNIF.: enhances trunk stabilization by facilitating LAT trunk mvmt
ONSET AGE: 32 wks. gestation
INTEGR8N AGE: 2 mos.
Galant
STIM: in supine, fully rotate infant’s head and hold for 5 secs
RESP: ext of extremitites on face side, flx of extremities on skull side
FUNCT. SIGNIF.: promotes visual attention to UE; decrease incidence of rolling
ONSET AGE: 37 wks. gestation
INTEGR8N AGE: 4-6 mos.
Asymmetric tonic neck (ATNR)
STIM: place finger in infant’s palm
RESP: finger flx; reflexive grasp
FUNCT. SIGNIF.: incr palmar tactile input; preps muscles for voluntary grasp
ONSET AGE: 37 wks. gestation
INTEGR8N AGE: 4-6 mos.
Palmar grasp
STIM: place infant in supine
RESP: increased extensor tone
FUNCT. SIGNIF.: facilit8s full-body extensor tone; allows posture to adapt to that of the head
ONSET AGE: >37 wks. gestation
INTEGR8N AGE: 6 mos.
Tonic labyrinthine-Supine (TLR)
STIM: place infant in prone
RESP: increased flexor tone
FUNCT. SIGNIF.: facilitates full-body flexor tone; allows posture to adapt to that of the head
ONSET AGE: >37 wks gestation
INTEGR8N AGE: 6 mos.
Tonic labyrinthine-Prone (TLR)
STIM: hold infant in horizontal prone suspension
RESP: complete extension of head, trunk, and extremities
FUNCT. SIGNIF.: Regul8s tone; promotes prone extension to manage flexor tone
ONSET AGE: 3-4 mos.
INTEGR8N AGE: 12-24 mos.
Landau
STIM: place infant in crawling position and extend head
RESP: flex of hips and knees
FUNCT. SIGNIF.: facilit8s quadruped position in prep for crawling; breaks up total-bod extension
ONSET AGE: 4-6 mos.
INTEGR8N AGE: 8-12 mos.
Symmetric tonic neck (STNR)
STIM: place infant in supine and fully turn head to one side
RESP: log rolling of entire bod to maintain alignment c head
FUNCT. SIGNIF.: facilitat8s rolling; maintain bod orientation in resp to cervical pos changes
ONSET AGE: 4-6 mos.
INTEGR8N AGE: 5 yoa.
Neck righting (on body) (NOB)
STIM: place infant in supine, flex one hip and knee toward chest and hold briefly
RESP: segmental rolling of upper trunk to maintain alignment
FUNCT. SIGNIF.: promotes trunk and spinal rotation to facilitate sitting and quadruped positions.
ONSET AGE: 4-6 mos.
INTEGR8N AGE: 5 yoa.
Body righting (on body) (BOB)
