Reflexes Flashcards
primitive reflex is an ____/____ response evoked by a given ____. its purpose is ____ and ____.
Primitive Reflexes : Immediate involuntary response evoked by a given stimulus. Purpose : Movement and Survival
Multisensory Reflexes Describe? Integrated? what if retained? Moro
Moro: 0:4 to 0:6 multisensory. when baby’s head is dropped below spine/loud noise arms and fingers extend then flex. baby might cry. if retained likely hypersensitive to sensory stim-profound motor and physiological effects.
Position Reflexes Describe? Integrated? what if retained? TLR ATNR STNR
TLR 0:6 months Flexion- prone (fetal position) extension/ supine (birth canal) retained: effects vestibular function and tone ATNR: 0:4-0:6 months turn babies head they put arms in fencing position. helps babies breathe on tummy. retained: issues with rolling, balance, cross midline, visual motor, awkwardness, cog effects. STNR: not present at birth 8:0 to 1:0 reflex of position. head looks up arms raise up lower limbs have gone into flexion. if retained :noticeable with posture will effect tone while moving or sitting.
Tactile reflexes of foot/spine Describe? Integrated? what if retained? spinal galant Babinski Plantar
Babinski 0:8-1:0 stroke outer boarder of sole creates foot dorsiflexion and toe extension retained: indicates neurological abnormality, which merits immediate investigation Plantar: 0:9 toes flex when pressure placed on ball of feet. retained: Gravitational insecurity, hypersensitivity, toe-walker.
Tactile reflexes of hand/mouth Describe? Integrated? what if retained? Palmar Babkin Rooting
Palmar/ Babkin: 0:4- 0:6 palmar fingers flex around object placed in palm retained Babkin: palmar mandibular response. moves head/mouth opens when palmar initiated. palmar/Babkin retained: manual dexterity lack of separation of hand/mouth movements, Hypersensitivity in the palm of the hand Rooting 0:3 months baby turns towards stimulus to feed. retained: Hypersensitivity, and Poor fine muscle control of the mouth, dribbling.
Retained VS integrated
•Retained: if still present past milestone •Integrated: reflex no longer present by ___ age
ATNR stands for: emerges: Birth: Inhibited:
Asymmetrical tonic neck reflex emerges: 18 weeks utero Birth: present Inhibited: 4-6 months
what reflex? when head is fully rotated and held, the extremities on face side extend and skull side flexes (fencing position)
ATNR
Moro Reflex Inhibited:
Emerges: 9 weeks in utero Birth: fully present Inhibited: 4-6 months of life
what reflex? -multisensory -when infants head dropped backwards, arms extend and hands open.
Moro
Babkin/babinski reflexes Emerges: Birth: Inhibited:
Babkin/babinski reflexes Emerges: 24-28 weeks in utero Birth: fully present Inhibited: 8-12 months of lif
what reflex? toes flare when stroked along lateral aspect of foot
Babinski
what reflex? infant’s cheeks or lips stroked they turn head in that direction.
rooting
Rooting reflex Emerges: Inhibited:
Emerges: 24-28 weeks in utero Inhibited: 3 months
STNR stands for? Emerges: Inhibited:
Symmetrical Tonic Neck Reflexes (STNR) Emerges: 4-6 months life Inhibited: 8-12 months of life
What reflex? When infant is in quadruped position and the neck is placed on extension, the hips and knees flex
STNR
what reflex? Toes flex when pressure is placed on ball of foot. inhibited:
Plantar grasp inhibited: 9 months
Palmar reflexes: Emerges: Birth: Inhibited:
Emerges: 11 weeks in utero Birth: fully present Inhibited: 4-6 months life
what reflex? Fingers flex reflexively when a finger is placed in palm. what is the palmar-mandibular response related to this reflex?
Palmar grasp Babkin reflex= palmar-mandibular response to pressure in hand
Spinal Galant reflexes: Emerges: Birth: Inhibited:
Emerges: 20 weeks in utero Birth: actively present Inhibited: 2 months of life
what reflex? lateral flexion and skin wrinkles on stimulated side of spine when infant is suspended in prone and tapped/stroked along spine
Spinal Galant
what reflex? when held in prone suspension (horizontal), infant extends head, trunk, and extremities.
Landau (parachute)
Landau/ parachute reflex emerges: inhibited:
emerges: 3-4 months inhibited: 12-24 months
