Reflexes Flashcards
1
Q
Define reflex
A
Is any response that occurs automatically without conscious effort and a part of a biological system linking stimulus with response
2
Q
What are the two types of reflex?
A
- simple (basic) reflex, which are built in, unlearned responses, such as pulling the hand away from a burning hot stove
- acquired (conditioned) reflexes, which are result of practice and after considerable effort. eg, typing, tango dancing, rock climbing techniques
3
Q
Define reflex arc
What are the five components
A
is the neural pathway involved in accomplishing reflex activity
Receptor, afferent pathway, integrating center, efferent pathway, effector
4
Q
What is the integrating center for basic reflexes? learned reflexes?
A
spinal cord and brainstem
Higher brain centers for learned reflexes
5
Q
What is the stretch reflex
A
involves an afferent neuron originating at a stretch-detecting receptor in a skeletal muscle.
