Reflexes Flashcards
Rooting
Seen: 28w gestation; Integ: 3mo/7mo asleep
Elicited - Stoke near corner of mouth
Response - Moves to stimuli
Sucking
Seen: 28w gestation; Integ: 2-5mo
Elicited - Finger on lips
Response - Lips move in a sucking motion
Palmer Grasp
Seen: 37w gestation; Integ: 4-6mo
Elicited - Pressure to palm from ulnar side
Response - Finger flexion
Flexor Withdrawl
Seen: 28w G; Integ: 2mo
Elicited - Supine,LE extended, stimulate (touch/pressure) on bottom foot
Response - Flexion of stimulated leg and foot/toes curl
Traction
Seen: 28wk G; Integ: 2-5mo
Elicited - Supine, pressure to palms from ulnar side (raise arms)
Response - Fingers/UE flex
Crosses Extension (2 ways)
Seen: 28w G; Integ: 2mo
Elicited - 1. Supine both legs extended, stimulate medial side of one leg 2. Supine, 1 leg extended, 1 leg flexed, flex the extended leg
Response - 1. Non-stim leg internally rotates and flexes, then extends 2. Non-stim leg extends
Extensor Thrust
Seen: 28w G; Integ: 2mo
Elicited - Supine, 1 leg extended and 1 leg flexed. Stim sole of flexed foot
Response - Extension of stim extremity
Placing of arms
Seen: Birth; Integ: 2mo
Elicited - Hold infant in upright position, stim back of hand, usually on table top edge
Response - Exaggerated flexion, the extension of stim arm to find surface to “place” hand
Placing of legs
Seen: 35w G; Integ: 2mo
Elicited - Hold infant in upright position, stim top of foot usually on table edge
Response - Exaggerated flexion then extension of stim leg to find surface to “place” foot
Primary Standing
Seen: Birth; Integ: 2-3mo
Elicited - Hold infant upright, place some weight on feet. Lean forward to stim ball of foot
Response - Extension of legs
Stepping
Seen: 37w G; Integ: 2-3mo
Elicited - Hold infant in upright position, putting some weight on feet. Lean infant forward slightly if necessary to stim reflex
Response - Rhythmical alternating stepping movements
Galant
Seen: 32wk G; Integ: 2mo
Elicited - Prone position on supporting surface, stoke down one side of spinal column
Response - Lateral flexion on stim side
Magnet
Seen: Birth; Integ: 2mo
Elicited - Using either flexed arm or leg, put pressure on palm of hand or sole of foot. Remove pressure
Response - Limb extends, following your hand
ATNR (Asymmetrical tonic neck reflex)
Seen: 37wk G (strongest @ 2mo); Integ: 4-6mo
Stim - Supine, head in mid-position, turn head to one side
Response - Extension of arm/leg on face side; flexion of arm/leg on skull side
TLR - P
Seen: 37w G; Integ: 6mo
Stim - Prone position
Response - Flexor tone against passive extension
