Reflex Arc Flashcards
What is the purpose of rather reflex arc?
Bring about a reflex action
What is a reflex action?
A fast automatic response by an effector organ (a muscle) or a gland to a stimulus received by a receptor organ.
What are the 2 types of reflexes?
Somatic and Automatic reflexes
What is the function of a somatic reflex?
Activate skeletal muscles
What is the function of an automatic refelx?
Activate smooth or cardiac muscle and glands
What are the 5 essential component of a somatic reflex arc
Receptor e.g skin Sensory Neuron Connector neuron Motor neuron Effector e.g muscle
What is the function of a receptor?
Responds to stimuli and generates impulses
What is the function of a sensory neuron?
Carries impulses to CNS
What is the function of a connector neuron?
Acts as reflex centre
What is the function of a motor neuron?
Carries impulses to an effector organ
What is the. Function of an effector?
Brings about change
Where are reflex centres situated?
Brain and spinal cord
What is the function of brain for in reflex centres?
Controls reflexes such as sneezing , breathing, blinking
What is the function of spinal cord in reflex centres ?
Control primitive reflexes such as knee jerk.
What is the function of a reflex arc?
Receptors respond to stimulus, to generate impulses in sensory neurons,
Impulses are conducted along sensory neurons to grey matter in spinal cord
Here impulses make synaptic contact with connector neurons act as reflex centres.
Then make synaptic contact with motor neurons, which conduvpct them to effector.
The effector brings about a response
Impulses are conducted to cerebral cortex of brain - interpreted as pain.
