15
Q

What is the function of a reflex arc?

A

Receptors respond to stimulus, to generate impulses in sensory neurons,
Impulses are conducted along sensory neurons to grey matter in spinal cord
Here impulses make synaptic contact with connector neurons act as reflex centres.
Then make synaptic contact with motor neurons, which conduvpct them to effector.
The effector brings about a response
Impulses are conducted to cerebral cortex of brain - interpreted as pain.

16
Q

What is important about reflex arcs?

A
  1. Enable body to respond quickly to a stimulus.

2. Provide inborn safety mechanisms that PROTECT body from danger

17
Q

What is a reflex arc?

A

A neutral pathway filled by impulses from a receptor to an effector

18
Q

What are some examples of reflexes?

A

Sneezing
Blinking
Yawning
Coughing

19
Q

How are synapses formed?

A

With The gap that separates neurons and adjacent membranes

20
Q

What is a synapse?

A

The place where a nerve impulse passes from an axon terminal to a neuron, muscle cell or a gland cell.

21
Q

How do Impulses travel across a synapse?

A

Nerve impulse reach terminal branches, vesicles burst, release neurontransmitters to diffuse across gap

Neurontransmitters carry impulses across gap

22
Q

Why are synapses important?

A
  1. Make sure impulses flow in ONE DIRECTION only
  2. Allow dispersal of impulses
  3. Allow filtering out of unnecessary stimuli
