Q

What does the ‘second victim’ refer to in healthcare? What can this lead to?

A
  • There is an emotional impact on the clinician when involved in a Significant Untoward Incident or complaint.
  • In an industry where there is a low tolerance (and high cost) for failure, individuals can be left doubting themselves and may even be traumatised by the event.
  • This can lead to burnout or thoughts of leaving the profession.
