REE Flashcards
1
Q
def of REE
A
Yttrium + lanthanides (15) = REY
(+ scandium found in most REE deposits)
2
Q
characteristics of REE
A
increasing atomic number -> decreasing atomic radii -> chem variations
high chemi simiarity -> slow C° changes by geoX processes, making prop useful for geochronology and fossil dating
3
Q
uses and properties
A
magnetic properties : Nd, Dy, Sm -> wind turbines, electric motors, guidance systems, speaker, computers
luminescent prop : glass, TV, fiber transmission, lasers
electrical prop : batterieswith higher energy density
4
Q
general properties
A
- incorporated in deeper portions of planet
- high field strength and large ionic radii make them incompatible for most rock-forming minertals
- X similar and difficult to seperate
- LREE have larger ionic radii and make them more incompatible than HREE which stay in crystallline residue while LREE go in melt
5
Q
X atomic prop
A
-e- ar not on the outermost e- shell and are added to the 4f-orbital => tend to occur in the same oxidation state 3+
