Reducing Voltage Flashcards
What is mains electricity
230V
What do step down transformers do?
Reduce the voltage from 230V to a dutiable value for electronic devices
How are all transformers made?
Winding wire around iron or another magnetic material
What are the 2 coils in a step down transformer
Primary and secondary coil
Is there electrical connection between coils ?
No the connection is magnetic
In an electrical supply the primary coil is connected to where?
Mains supply
In an electrical supply where is the secondary coil connected to?
Electronic circuit
When the a.c. Voltage in the primary coil is switched on what is caused?
An a.c. Current
What does current cause
Change un magnetic field
What does the iron core guide
The magnetic field into the secondary coil
What does the changing magnetic field cause
A.c. Voltage
What is the process of converting ac to dc called
Rectification
What part of the circuit causes ac to convert to dc
Rectifier
What are the active components in rectifiers
Diodes
What is ac
When the direction of electron flow is constantly changing
What is dc
The direction flow of electrons never changes
What is a full wave rectifier
Its output is rapidly changing from zero to peak
What is a half wave rectifier
Its output is not a constant value and for half the rime the output voltage is zero to peak
What is a smoothed output
When there is only a small ripple on the output voltage
When the output voltage of the rectifier is increasing the capacitor is
Charged to peak
When output voltage decreases what happens to the capacitor
Discharged slowly
When the crest of the rectifier is recharged what happens
The whole process begins again
