Reducing Sugars vs Non Reducing Sugars Flashcards
What is a reducing sugar?
Carbohydrates that react with oxidizing agents are called reducing agents
What is a non-reducing sugar?
a carbohydrate that has a bond that prevents it from participating in redox reactions
What is the purpose of the glucose oxidase test?
Measure the amount of glucose in the blood and urine
What is a glycosidic bond?
A glycosidic bond is a bond between the anomeric carbon atom of a monosaccharide and -OR group
What is an alpha-1,4 linkage?
A glycosidic bond below the plane of the sugar ring
What is a beta-1,4 linkage?
A glycosidic bond above the plane of the sugar ring
What three disaccharides are formed from the monosaccharides glucose, fructose, and galactose?
Maltose, Lactose, and Sucrose
Which artificial sweetener resembles sucrose?
Sucralose
Which artificial sweetener is made from amino acids?
Aspartame
How can increasing sugar in your diet contribute to tooth decay?
When you eat sugary foods, the sugar is broken down by bacteria which ferments the sugar and produces an acid. This acid dissolves the mineralized enamel on your teeth which weakens it causing tooth decay.
