Redox reactions Flashcards
What does redox stand for?
Reduction - oxidation
What is OILRIG an acronym form?
Oxidation is loss of electrons, Reduction is gain of electrons.
Explain a redox reaction in a space ship.
The combining of liquid hydrogen and oxygen. In this reaction hydrogen is oxidized (losses electrons) and oxygen is reduced (gains electrons) to form H_2O (water.
What is an oxidation number?
The excess (or defecit) of electrons that we pretend an element has in a compound.
What is the oxidation number of an element.
Zero
What does oxygen almost always have an oxidation number of?
-2, unless in a peroxide molecule, where it is -1
What is hydrogens oxidation number?
+1
What oxidation number do the halogens have?
-1
What is the Haber process?
Removes Nitrogen from air, combines with hydrogen to form NH_3 (Ammonia). So
N_2 + 3H_2 = 2NH_3
