Precipitation reactions Flashcards

1
Q

Why do things precipitate out of solution?

A

Because they are strongly enough bonded that they are not able to be disrupted by the polarity of water. As such they remain non-polar and so become hydrophobic and fall out of the solution.

Q

Do nitrates (NO_3) dissolve well or badly in water.

A

Nitrates are always anions in ionic compounds and dissolve very well in water

Q

Why do we write every ionic compound dissolved in a solution out separately?

A

Because it doesn’t matter what form they were originally in, in solution they will be dissociated by the polar water molecules.

If some ionic compound combination of these ions (i.e., a cation with anion) is insoluble, it will form a precipitate.
