redox reactions Flashcards
what is oxidation in terms of electron
a loss of electrons
what is reduction in terms of electrons
a gain of electrons
what does the phrase OIL RIG stand for
Oxidation Is Loss, Reduction Is Gain
what happens to iron atoms when they react with dilute acid
oxidised to Fe2+ ions
what is the rule for displacement
a more reactive metal will displace a less reactive metal from its compound
what happens if you put iron in a solution of copper sulfate
the more reactive iron will ‘kick out’ the less reactive copper from the solution. you end up with iron sulfate solution and copper metal
iron + copper sulfate – iron sulfate + copper
what happens to the electrons of iron and copper in this reaction
iron loses 2 electrons to become a 2+ ion - its oxidised
copper gains these 2 electrons to become cooper atom - its reduced
what happens in displacement reactions
always the metal ion that gains electrons and is reduced
the metal atom always loses electrons and is oxidised
what happens in an ionic equation
only the particles that react and the products they form are shown
for example : Mg + Zn2+ – Mg2+ + Zn
write an ionic equation for the reaction : Zn + FeSo – ZnSO + Fe
Zn + Fe2+ – Zn2+ + Fe
Zn is being oxidised
Fe2+ is being reduced
