redox reactions Flashcards
1
Q
describe oxidation
A
oxidation is the gain of oxygen atoms, loss of hydrogen atoms, loss of electrons and an increase in the oxidation state number
2
Q
describe reduction
A
reduction is the loss of oxygen atoms, gain of hydrogen atoms, gain of electrons and a decrease in the oxidation state number
3
Q
what is a disproportionation reaction?
A
it is a redox reaction in which one species is simultaneously reduced and oxidised
4
Q
how to balance redox equations under an acidic medium?
A
- identify species getting oxidised or reduced
- balance the elements
- balance oxygen atoms by adding H2O
- balance hydrogen atoms by adding H+
- balance overall charges by adding electrons
- ensure that the electrons on both half equations are balanced
- eliminate any common species on both sides
5
Q
how to balance an equation under an alkaline medium?
A
- identify species getting oxidised or reduced
- balance the elements
- balance oxygen atoms by adding H2O
- balance hydrogen atoms by adding H+
- balance overall charges by adding electrons
- remove H+ by adding OH-
- combine H+ with OH- to form H2O
- remove any species that appears on both sides
- multiply such that the electrons in both half-equations are the right number
- remove any common species on both sides
