Redox I Flashcards
What is the oxidation number and what does it tell you?
It tells you how many electrons an atom has donated or accepted to become an ion
What is the oxidation number of a simple monatomic ion?
ON=The charge of the ion
Cl‐ will have a -1 charge
What is the Oxidation Number of elements in periodic table?
0 as they are not ions so they have no charge
What is the Oxidation Number of molecular ions?(Total)
State the ON of SO4
The Oxidation Number of a molecular ion is the overall charge of the ion.
SO4 has a 2- charge so ON is 2-
What is the oxidation number of Hydrogen? And state any cases where this might not be the case?
Hydrogen always has an ON of +1,except in metal hydrides where it is -1
And also in molecular hydrogen(H2)where it is 0
What is the ON of oxygen? And state where this might not be the case?
Oxygen has an ON of -2,and its 0 in O2
-1 in H2O2
+2 in F2O
What is oxidation in terms of oxygen and electrons?
Oxidation is the gain of oxygen and the loss of electrons
What is reduction in terms of oxygen and electrons?
Reduction is gain of electrons and loss in oxygen
OILRIG
Some elements have roman numerals what does this tell you and is it the case?
Some elements in the periodic table such as the transition metals can have multiple ON as it has multiple charges
The Roman numerals tells you the ON
For example,Iron(II)oxide, iron has an ON of 2+
What is the oxidising agent?
The oxidising agent accepts electrons and get reduced
The element reduced is the oxidising agent
What is the reducing agent?
The reducing agent is when an element donates electrons and gets oxidised
The element oxidised is the reducing agent
What is disproportionation?
A redox reaction where the same species is oxidised and reduced
