Redox I Flashcards
Define oxidation and reduction
Oxidation is the loss of electrons, it involves an increase in oxidation state.
Reduction is the gain of electrons., it involves in a decrease of oxidation state.
Define Redox
A reaction where oxidation and reduction takes place
What is the oxidation number for a molecule ie chlorine?
0
What is the oxidation number for uncombine elements ie Neon?
0
What is the oxidation number of Hydrogen?
+1 usually
-1 in metal hydrides
0 in a molecule
What is the oxidation number of oxygen
-2 usually
+2 in F20
-1 in hydrogen peroxide(H202)
What is the oxidation number of fluorine?
-1 usually
0 in atom or molecule
Define Oxidising Agent
A species which reduces itself (lowers it’s oxidation number) gaining electrons.
Define Disproportionation
An element in a single species that has simultaneously been oxidised and reduced. This is seen through a change in oxidation numbers
Define Reducing Agent
A species which oxidises itself(increase in oxidation number) losing electrons
