Equilibrium I Flashcards
Define Dynamic Equilibrium
The forward and backward reaction are at the same constant rate
Concentrations of the reactants and products remain constant.
Define ‘Homogenous System’
Everything is in the same physical state.
Define ‘Heterogenous System’
Not everything is in the same physical state.
Describe the effect on increasing pressure on a Homogenous System in equilibrium
Only works with gases.
The equilibrium point will move over to the side with the least number of molecules. (Use the mole ratio)
So less gas particles are produced to reduce the pressure.
Describe the effect on increasing temperature on a Homogenous System in equilibrium
The equilibrium point will move to over to endothermic reaction.
Either the forward or backward reaction will be endothermic reaction.
So the endothermic side will be favoured so the environment gets cooled
Describe the effect on increasing concentration on a Homogenous System in equilibrium
Increasing concentration increases the number of particles of the certain compound The equilibrium point will move to counteract the change to reduce the number of particles.
So if one of the conc of the reagents increases the equilibrium point will move to the right to reduce the number of reagents produced
Describe the comprise between yield and rate of reaction
Temperature shouldn’t be too low that it makes the reaction very slow
But Temperature shouldn’t be too high that it will move the equilibrium point to cool down the system which will lower the yield of the desired product (depending where the endo/exother reaction is)
