REDOX AS Flashcards
What does reduction mean
Gaining of electrons, loss of oxygen.
What does oxidation mean
Loss of electrons, gain of oxygen
What is the oxidation state of oxygen when it is bonded to Fluorine
+2
What is the oxidation state of oxygen in H202 (peroxide)
-1
What are the oxidation states of group 1,2 and 7 (halides)
1=+1
2=+2
7=-1
What is the overall charge of a neutral compound
0 (everything in that compound must add to 0)
What is the overall charge in a polyatomic ion
The charge eg +1,+2,-1,-2
How do you find oxidation states in a polyatomic ion
All oxidation states must add to the charge of the ion
What is an oxidising agent
Causes something else to be OXIDISED
It accepts (gains) electrons
It gets reduced
What is a reducing agent
Causes something to be reduced
It donates (loses electrons)
It gets oxidised
What are the steps for writing half equations
- write what you know (reactants + products)
- Balance for atoms (not O or H)
- Balance for O using H20
- Balance for H by adding H+ ions
- Balance charge by adding e- to the side with the higher charge
What is the oxidation state of a hydride
-1
What is usually the oxidation state of oxygen
-2
Oxidation state of hydrogen
+1
What are agents always
Reactants
