Redox Flashcards
What is a half equation?
They are equations that show the loss or gain of electrons by a species.
What is the relationship between oxidation number and the species?
The oxidation number of an atom is the same as the charge on the ion.
What is the sum of the oxidation number in molecules or compounds?
Zero
What is the relationship between complex ions and oxidation numbers?
The oxidation number on the atoms is equal to the overall charge
What happens to the oxidation numbers when atoms are oxidised or reduced?
In oxidation the oxidation number increases (+ve)
In reduction the oxidation number decreases (-ve)
What are the 3 steps to balance a half equation?
1) Identify the atom being oxidised or reduced
2) Balance the atom on both sides by addition of H2O or H+
3) Add the number of electrons to ensure the charge on both sides is the same
What are the 3 steps to combine two half equations?
1) Balance the electrons in each half equation
2) Balance electrons will cancel out
3) Combine equations
What is the definition of an oxidizing agent?
Electron Acceptor
What is the definition of a reducing agent?
Electron Donor
What are some common examples of oxidising agents?
H2SO4, Al3+, Cl2
What are some common examples of reducing agents?
Na, O2-, I-, S2O3(2-)
What is disproportionation?
The simultaneous oxidation and reduction of the same species.
What are the examples disproportionation species?
H2O2 and ClO-
What is the oxidation state of an combined element?
Zero
