Equilibria Flashcards
What is dynamic equilibrium?
It is a stage of a reaction where the forward and backward reactions have the same rate.
What is the difference between an open and closed system?
Open- where the products are allowed to escape as they are formed.
Closed- where products cannot leave the reaction.
When are reactions represented by equilibrium signs?
When the system is closed and the reverse reaction is significant.
What is the expression for equilibrium constant (Kc)?
Kc= [Products]/[Reactants]
What is La Chateliers principle?
If a constraint is imposed on a system at equilibrium, the system will respond to counteract the effect of the constraint.
What happens if the concentration of reactant is increased?
The system will move to whichever side decreases the concentration and vice versa
What is the effect on Kc when change in concentrations in the system?
No effect
What happens if the pressure of the system increases?
The system will move to the side with fewer gas molecules and vice versa. Kc is unaffected.
What happens when the temperature of the system increases?
The direction of the endothermic reaction is favoured and vice versa
What happens to the position of equilibrium on addition of a catalyst?
Unchanged with no affect on Kc.
What is the effect of increased temperature on Kc?
Exothermic: Kc decreases
Endothermic: Kc increases
As the rate constants are altered
