redox Flashcards
1
Q
what is the oxidation state of uncombined ions?
A
0
2
Q
what is oxidation?
A
the loss of electrons, gain of oxygen, increase in oxidation number
3
Q
what is reduction
A
gain of electron, loss of oxygen,
decrease in oxidation number
4
Q
what is disproportionation?
A
when one species is both oxidised and reduced
5
Q
what is an oxidising agent?
A
a substance which oxidises another substance and in doing so becomes reduced
6
Q
what is a reducing agent?
A
a substance which reduces another substance and in doing so becomes oxidised
7
Q
in what situations does oxygen NOT have an oxidation state of 2-?
A
- when in a peroxide, where it has an OS of 1-
- when in a compound with fluorine because fluorine is more electronegative (o2 has a positive oxidation state)
8
Q
what are the steps involved in writing ionic equations?
A
- write the full equation
- split any soluble (aq) compounds in reactants or products into ions
3 remove spectator ions (ions which have not been oxidised or reduced)
