Redox Flashcards
What is a redox reaction?
A redox reaction is an exchange of electrons (electrons are passed from one substance to another).
What is Oxidation?
Oxidation is the loss of electrons.
What is an oxidising agent?
A substance that will accept the electrons.
What is Reduction?
Reduction is the gain of electrons.
What is a reducing agent?
A substance that will donate electrons.
Where are the best reducing agents found in the data book?
On the top right hand side of the table on the right hand side of the arrow.
What are the best oxidising agents found in the data book?
On the bottom left hand side of the table on the left hand side of the arrow.
Which elements can act as reducing agents.
The elements with low electronegativities (metals) which form ions by losing electrons.
Which elements can act as oxidising agents?
The elements with high electronegativities (non-metals) which can form ions by gaining electrons.
Where are the strongest reducing and oxidising agents found in the periodic table?
Reducing agents: found in group 1
Oxidising agents: found in group 7
When does a displacement reaction occur?
A displacement reaction occurs when a more reactive element displaces, or pushes out, a less reactive element from a compound that contains the less reactive element.
What do acidified solutions contain?
Hydrogen ions.
How do you write an ion equation that is not given in the data book?
- ) Balance the non-oxygen element.
- ) Balance the oxygens with water.
- ) Balance the hydrogens with hydrogen ions.
- ) Finally balance the charges with adding electrons.
