Stations of the cross
A series of 14 artwork that show the stages jesus went through on his way to die.
Used most often at lent. You can go to each picture or statue and you have a minute reflection at each station as a way of understanding and remembering jesus’ sacrifice or atonement
Lectern
Where the readings are read from (lectionary is the book that is read)
Tabernacle
This is where the consecrated hosts are kept (blessed sacrament)
To keep the presence of God
If the red candle is on then the consecrated hosts are present
Crucifix
Cross with Jesus’ body on it
Free will and sin
God gave humans free will to allow them to make their own decisions. Sin is the rejection of the will of god
Atonement
Restoring the relationship between people and God through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus
Crucifixion
Jesus being fixed to a cross, and dying to relieve us from our sins
Resurrection
Jesus rising from the dead after dying on the cross
Ascension
The event 40 days after the resurrection,when Jesus returned to God the father in heaven
Restoration
When things are brought back to the way that God intended them to be
Redemption
Making up for the wrongs done by other people, to bring humans back to a relationship with God
Grace
Gods free gift of his unconditional love to the believer
Pentecost
seventh Sunday after Easter, commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and other followers of Jesus Christ
Conscience
For christians, the voice of God in the heart or soul of a person
The mass
Mass is the central liturgical ritual in the Catholic Church where the bread and wine are consecrated and become the body and blood of Christ
Liturgy of the word
There is a reading from the bible to the people. (3-4 passages). Bible is read out in mass to tell and remind people of Gods story of salvation.
Offertory
Where the bread and wine is brought up to the altar. It is a sign of our thanksgiving to God for what he has given to us.
Eucharistic prayer
Words of Jesus at the Last supper are repeated (“Take this, all of you, and eat of it”) Jesus was anticipating his death
Our father
This is a prayer which is significant as it is the prayer that Jesus taught. us to say. Significant to redemption as it reminds us that Jesus’ enables us to give us the power to call God ‘father’
Communion
This is when the people receive the body and blood of christ. Quote ‘Jesus said ‘whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood will have eternal life’
Words of Institution
The central part of the mass is called the concentration. Here the priest says the words of jesus from the last supper. These are known as the Words of Institution
