What are the red flags (refer out) that would indicate cancer
- H/o cancer
- Night pain at rest
- Unexplained weight loss
- > 50 or <17
- Failure to improve within expected time frame
Red flags that would indicate infection
- immunosuppressed
- Prolonged temp > 100.4
- H/o IV drug use
- Recent UTI, cellulitis, pneumonia
Red flags that would indicate vertebral fracture
- Prolonged corticosteroid use
- mild trauma > 50 y/o
- Age > 70
- Osteoporosis
- Recent trauma- fall > 5 feet, MVA
- Bruising over spine
Red flags that indicate AAA
- palpable mass on the abdomen
- Atherosclerosis vascular disease
- throbbing/pulsing back pain at rest
- Age > 60 y/o
Yellow flags- what are they and what do they indicate
Psychosocial factors that indicate increased risk for disability- use FABQ, start Back, depression ?
- emotional distress
- Hypervigilence
- pain catastrophizing
- elevated fear avoidance beliefs
- low self efficacy
- misunderstanding nature and impact of pain
- misunderstanding best strategy for long term success
What are blue flags?
injured workers- with disability/ work comp cases
1. low job satisfaction
2. wanting a vocational change- different role
3. having worksite challenges
4. don’t like job
5. not motivated to return
may need a psych consult/vocational rehab
What are black flags?
Financial/ societal issues- disability, cant return to work
Reimbursement incentives to stay disabled
