Red Shift Flashcards
How to the wavelength of light increase?
As it travels across the spectrum from blue shift to red shift
What is the red shift?
The light waves are stretched out of the star/galaxy is moving away from us
What is the blue shift?
The light waves are squashed together if the star/galaxy is moving towards us
How do you get a bigger shift between star/galaxy?
The fast the star or galaxy is moving towards or away from us
Wha are red shift and blue shift exiles of?
The Doppler effect
What is the Doppler effect?
The change in the observed wavelengths of waves due to the motion of the source towards or away from the observer
Who discovered the doppler effect?
Christian Doppler in 1842 using sound waves
What did Edwin Hubble and what year?
That the light from distant galaxies was ‘red - shifted.’
He found that the further a Galaxy is from us, the bigger its red shift is in 1929
What is the whole universe doing?
The whole universe is expanding
How far are the most distant galaxies?
About 13 000 million light years away
What can we use to split the light into a spectrum?
A prism
