Q

When a solid is heated and it melts, what happens to the temperature?

A

At the melting point, all of the thermal energy is used to break the bonds and so the temperature remains the same until all of the solid has melted

Q

When a liquid evaporates it cools - why?

A

For evaporation to take place the fastest moving particles need to leave the surface. When this happens the average kinetic energy of the remaining particles goes down, and therefore the temperature goes down.
