Kinetic Theory Flashcards
How are the particles arranged in a solid?
Very closely packed - they cannot move
How are the particles arranged in a liquid?
Closely packed but can move around
How are the particles arranged in a gas?
Totally random arrangement, not touching but constantly moving around
Which state of matter has the largest forces between its particles?
Solid
Which state of matter has the weakest forces between its particles?
Gas
When a solid is heated and it melts, what happens to the temperature?
At the melting point, all of the thermal energy is used to break the bonds and so the temperature remains the same until all of the solid has melted
Why does a bathroom mirror mist up on a cold day?
The glass is cold so any water vapour in the air will condense
When a liquid evaporates it cools - why?
For evaporation to take place the fastest moving particles need to leave the surface. When this happens the average kinetic energy of the remaining particles goes down, and therefore the temperature goes down.
