Red Eye & Hip Checks Flashcards
What is DDH?
Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a condition where the “ball and socket” joint of the hip does not properly form in babies and young children. It’s sometimes called congenital dislocation of the hip, or hip dysplasia.
Which gender is 5 times more likely to be born with DDH?
Females
Why does Hip Dysplasia occur?
The acetabulum and femoral head are not aligned
What are the causes of DDH?
Hip dysplasia can develop if the baby’s position in the womb puts pressure on the hips. It can also be genetic (passed down in families).
What are risk factors of DDH?
breech presentation, female sex, positive family history, firstborn status, and oligohydramnios.
What is the incidence of DDH?
1-2 per 1000
What is the Barlow’s maneuver and how is it done?
It is an assessment used for checking the hips for hip dysplasia. Done by adducting the hip while holding the knee straight.
What occurs during a Barlow’s maneuver that would indicate hip dysplasia
Femoral head pops out of socket.
What is the Ortolani maneuver?
Flexing baby’s hip at 90 degrees then abducting it.
What occurs during an Ortolani maneuver
Slips back into the acetabulum making an audible clunk
