What is blepharitis?
Inflammation of the eyelid
What are the two sub types of blepharitis?
Anterior and posterior
What makes up anterior blepharitis?
Seborrhoeic and staphylococcal
What is the difference between anterior and posterior blepharitis clinically?
Lid margin is redder than deeper part of the lid in anterior
Describe seborrhoeic blepharitis
Dandruff, scales but lashes are unaffected
Describe staphylococcol blepharitis
Lashes are distorted, styes, ulcers on lid margin, corneal staining
What is posterior blepharitis?
Meibomian gland dysfunction
How does posterior blepharitis present?
Redness is in deeper part of the lid, margin and lashes are unaffected. Meibomian gland opening is swollen and pouting and can be dry and cystic
What disease is posterior blepharitis associated with?
Rosacea
What are the symptoms of blepharitis?
Gritty eye, red, mild discharge, foreign body sensation associated with other causes of red eye
How is blepharitis treated?
Lip hygiene, tear drop supplement, oral doxycycline 2-3 months - often chronic
Name three causes of follicular conjunctivitis
- viral
- chlamydia
- drugs
What can be given to patients with viral conjunctivitis?
Lubricants
How do corneal ulcers present?
Needle like severe pain, photophobia with profuse lacrimation, reduced vision, red eye, abnormal corneal reflex, corneal opacity, hypopyon
What are the two key main causes of corneal ulcers?
Infective and autoimmune
