How does subconjunctival haemorrhage present?
Bright red haemorrhage obviously seen,
Painless bleeding
Associated with high blood pressure, trauma to eye, base of skull fracture.
How does bacterial conjunctivitis present?
Mucopurulent discharge
Bilateral
Association (otitis media)
Rx- topical antibiotics, chloramphenicol/fusidic acid,
How does viral conjunctivitis present?
Watery discharge
Unilateral
Association with pharyngitis
Adenopathy
How does allergic conjunctivitis present?
Watery discharge
Bilateral
Associated with itch
Rx- antihistamine, NSAIDs
How do you treat episcleritis?
Lubricants
Oral NSAIDs
Rarely steroids
How does scleritis present?
Pain Ocular tenderness on movement and palpating. Watering and photophobia Appearance - blueish red ? Underlying autoimmune disease
Rx- NSAIDs
Corticosteroids
Who gets infectious keratitis?
Contact lens wearers
Or trauma
Sx- ocular pain, decreased vision, photophobia, corneal ulcer
How does herpetic keratitis present?
Dendritic ulceration (seen on slit-lamp with fluorescein)
PMH- cold sores
Rx- acyclovir, mydriatic (tropicamide), topical steroids (to minimise scarring)
How does anterior uveitis present?
Aka iritis.
Pain, photophobia and blurred vision.
Associated with HLA-B27 eg reactive arthritis, psoriasis, ankylosing spondylitis, inflammatory bowel disease,
Rx- topical glucocorticoids
How does acute angle closure glaucoma present?
Severe ocular pain
Semi-dilated pupil
Decreased vision
Coloured halos around light +/- headache and vomiting
Rx- reduce pressure,
Surgical -Laser iridotomy
Which eye condition is associated inflammatory bowel disease/reactive arthritis?
Anterior uveitis
